The Journey of a Writer Re-awakened

I’ve had a love of writing and reading since the day I can remember. When I was a little girl, I would read walking home from school and what should have been a 10-minute walk, would be a 30-minute walk, all in the name of reading just one more paragraph.

Over time, what I wrote about would change from poems and short stories to little anecdotes about life, to traveling and life lessons. Even though the topics changed, I never got bored of writing. But, for a while, it became a lost enjoyment of mine. There were many many years where my focus was on my career as an Accountant and doing “meaningful” work. There were so many distractions. Occasionally I would try to pick it up again and write an Instagram post here or there, but it didn’t stick. So, here I am, trying again.

Here's the thing, I don’t know what I want to write about. I’m in the heart of figuring out what’s next for my life – I’m 44 and single, I could write about my health journey which has been a rollercoaster, my relationship with finances, which has been exhausting but rewarding, finally landing a job I could see myself retiring at, which brings a joy I can’t express and do I attempt to date again, or live a wonderfully fulfilled life with my cat, for now – but, a lot of these topics feel cliché to me. Not to criticize anyone who does write about this because I read a lot of blogs with these topics, and I find them so comforting. But for me, on my journey, I’m not sure. Do I write a fiction book, that sounds fun but what would my genre be?

For now, I’m going to write about whatever I feel like and see what lands. Sometimes it will be my passion for bookkeeping, sometimes books, and maybe other times it will be about being middle aged. It could be about when to know when sticking to a passion that isn’t working is the right thing to do, and when to let it go, we shall see, but this I know, writing feels good. Expressing myself feels good, and going on a journey with an unknown destination is exciting.
